Munawar Faruqui, an Indian comedian, and the winner of Bigg Boss 17 was recently in trouble over a joke he made about the Konkani people recently. This led to anger on social media and forced Faruqui to tender an apology. It is within this context that this article seeks to analyse the controversy, Faruqui’s response as well as the public response to his apology. It also relates to the matters of comedy, culture, and the role of social media in influencing discussions and opinions.
The Controversial Joke and the First Reactions
In a recent stand up comedy show Munawar Faruqui made a casteist slur about Konkani people saying Konkanis fool others. This statement also went viral on the social media platforms and everyone demanded the authorities to take action against the statement. Most of the users complained and got angry and said that Faruqui is encouraging stereotypes and is an insult to a particular group.
The anger grew even higher after the video was uploaded on the internet and some people even threatened to kill the comedian. The case brought to light the thin line that comedians tend to tread especially when performing issues to do with culture or ethnicity.
Faruqui’s Public Apology
To the increasing fuss, Munawar Faruqui came to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, August 13, 2024, to post a video apology. He apologized for offending the people and went on to explain the circumstances under which he made the joke.

Faruqui said in Hindi, “I have realized some people are getting offended by my clip and I am a comedian I do not want to offend anyone.” He defended himself saying that when he performed the clip in the show there were people from all walks of life and they laughed. But he agreed that the joke was different and perhaps even hurtful when viewed online.
The comedian at the end of his apology said, “But when we see such things on the internet, and we notice it, we understand the issue. I want to apologize and say sorry to all. Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra.” He also tweeted the apology video with the caption “Much love and my apologies to Konkanis” in Marathi.

Public Response and Current Controversy
It was the same with Faruqui’s apology, some people accepted it while others continued to condemn him. Some of the social media users applauded him for being quick to act and owning up to what he said. A user of X said: “Not necessary but it’s good that you discussed it Appreaciated.”
Some people had no mercy for the ‘shameless’ bride-to-be, others were not as sympathetic. Some users criticized that the apology was fake and forced; one of the tweets was, “Darr gaya Munawar” which translates to English as “You got scared.” This sentiment captures the current discourse on the authenticity of apologies in the current society with the existence of social media and canceled culture.
The event also reopened debate on the nature of comedy and the role of the comedian in addressing contentious issues. Some people stated that comedians should be allowed to be as crude as they wanted to be, while others stated that one had to be sensitive to other people’s cultures.
