Netflix’s new live talk show, Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney streamed its first LIVE episode on the OTT platform on Thursday, 13th March 2025. The theme of the first episode was Lending People Money. The first episode was hosted by comedian John Mulaney and brought a mix of celebrity guests such as Michael Keaton, Joan Baez, Fred Armisen, and personal finance columnist Jessica Roy. The show also had offbeat discussions, and audience call-ins, all set against a cozy living-room-style backdrop.
Review:
Positives Aspects
There were a few entertaining moments spread throughout. Mulaney’s dry humor and self-awareness shone at times, especially when he joked about his sobriety and personal life.
The lineup of guests, including Michael Keaton, Fred Armisen, and Joan Baez, added variety, and some of their remarks were quite interesting.
The idea of involving real callers with money-related stories was a unique approach and felt different from a typical late-night format show.
Negative Aspects
Despite being marketed as a “live” show, much of the dialogue and interactions felt overly rehearsed.
It often seemed like everyone, including Mulaney, was following a script rather than engaging in natural, unscripted conversation.
This took away from the charm of a live format, making it feel more staged than spontaneous. Some segments dragged on for too long, like the awkward Richard Kind introduction and the Tracy Morgan sketch, which cut the mark completely. I went in expecting something lively and fun, but instead, I found it slow and unconvincing.
Another noticeable issue was the subtitles—they appeared late, making it difficult to follow conversations in real-time. Whether this was a technical glitch or a consequence of live production, it added to the overall feeling of disorganization.
Series Quality
While the set design of the cozy Los Angeles living room and guest selection gave the series a polished look, the pacing and structure felt weird.
The humor was inconsistent, with some segments landing well while others fell flat.
A few moments such as Joan Baez’s unexpected political statement or Keaton’s Jack Nicholson impression were good but not much enough to make the episode consistently engaging.
Verdict
With all its flaws, Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney didn’t feel like a must-watch, at least for me. You may enjoy some scattered moments of humor but poor timing and weak execution couldn’t be ignored. Overall, I’d give it 2 out of 5 stars as it is a LIVE show that still has a lot of potential to improve.
