Maharaj, as the name suggests is set in 1800s India, but the story is not about the splendid lifestyle or lavish gatherings of a Maharaj rather is based on a bitter truth that reflects the dark side of a social practice.
The film has been well received by the audiences on Netflix.The star cast is very interesting,with Junaid khan the debutant, son of one of the most versatile actors in India film industry, Amir Khan taking the lead,as a protagonist.He plays a role of a young enthusiastic, morally right journalist,who protects the society from evil practice of “charn seva” performed by women to please the highest priest. Jaideep Ahlawat, known for his versatility plays the priest and has outshined as the head priest, Maharaj.Sharvari and Shalini Pandey,both the actresses have created magic on screen with their subtle yet phenomenal acting skills.
The film reflects on the dark truth of ,”charn seva”, which involved sexual activities done by women to please the head priest in India around 150 years ago.The film is inspired by true events, is happened in the mid 1800s and later was denounced as evil practice both by the devotees and the court. The incident did change the outlook of devotees and in a way helped them to get back on the right track.The film through its cinematic grandeur enables the audience to be able to connect and understand the gravity of evil practiced around 150 years ago, thus touching them emotionally.
