Netflix’s ‘Back In Action’ Review: A Lukewarm attempt of Action Spy movie with predictable blueprint

Aptly named, ‘Back In Action’ marks both making a comeback after a break. While the two talented actors are certainly looking good back on screen, is the movie really a worthy choice for them to be ‘Back In Action’? Here’s the Review.

Back In Action

Netflix’s recent Spy Action movie ‘Back In Action’ rolls out the classic Spy story with predictable and gloomy humour, making it a dreary opening to the 2025 Action market. Starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, both making a great comeback personally as the former wanted to “reclaim” her life and focus on her family and the latter taking an unfortunate break after fighting an illness, ‘Back In Action’ was delayed and finally released on Netflix on January 17 worldwide.

From the director of ‘Horrible Bosses’ and ‘Baywatch’, the Netflix Spy movie is nothing special or unique than the regular, flat narrative of two spies who are out of action for a while only to return on field to sort out a dire matter. Essentially, ‘Back In Action’ can easily be one of the most predictable spy stories with the same draft punched in with eager narration and dull humour.

Emily and Matt as CIA Spies in ‘Back In Action’

‘Back In Action’ is the story of Emily and Matt, two quick witted, top level CIA Spies who form a relationship after being put together for an operation retrieving a powerful ‘Key’ that holds the technology to control major cities around the world. After retrieving, the duo is ambushed and survives an accident, only for them to know that Emily is pregnant, thus making them take the decision to retire from action. Cut to 15 years later they are a typical Suburban family with two kids and living under the radar, only for the CIA to contact them again, pulling ‘Back In Action’ for the safety of their children.

The age old, rundown spy story then unravels in all the ways the couple are fighting back in colourful action and chasing and restoring their family back is the rest of the story. The fact that Cameron Diaz who was seen nailing the action comedy in the past in ‘Charlie’s Angels’ chose this movie for her comeback after 10 years is slightly off putting. Jamie Foxx who has this charisma and suave that has been used to the advantage of linking comedy at times, is severely missing in this Seth Gordon action flick.

Villainising Andrew Scott only for him to be a passive character was unpredictable while the CIA agent Chuck finding the off radar couple to warn them about the trouble, only for him to be the actual villain is as predictable as the action sequences. Having Glen Close as the cool, former agent as Diaz’s mom somewhat cemented her overbearing mentality towards her children while Jamie Dementriou as Nigel for the chuckles was not landing as they expected.

The Verdict

‘Back In Action’ serves some good action sequences, primarily focusing on Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx who are in the forefront in the story that is neither full on action, nor emotionally layered. A snackable watch for a lazy evening stream on Netflix.
