Kambeyanda Devaiah Gulshan, or Gulshan Devaiah as per his screen name, is a prominent Indian film actor majorly seen in Hindi movies. He has portrayed several dark and eccentric roles and has a number of nominations and prizes to his name.
In an exclusive interview for Midst Live this month, Gulshan talked about Bangalore rains, his family, his popular cooking skills and a lot about his passion for cinema. The actor lives in Mumbai but at the time of the interview, he was in Bengaluru with his family.
“My father had cataract surgery about a month ago, so he needed some checkups … and my mom usually has … everything three months … she has checkups and she has also had cataract surgeries before so there are follow-ups,” the star noted.

Gulshan Devaiah’s vibrant and eventful career
Born on May 28, 1978, in Bengaluru, Gulshan is the son of Sri Devaiah and Pushpalata. He completed his schooling at St Joseph’s Indian High School. Later on, he graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology and stayed in the fashion industry for 10 years.
His acting career kicked off as an actor in plays at Bengaluru’s English theatre. He got his Bollywood debut through Anurag Kashyap’s 2010 short film ‘That Girl in Yellow Boots’, also starring Kalki Koechlin. He got nominated for Best Male Debut at the Filmfare Awards.

2011 brought him his next role. Gulshan starred in ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ (2011), a popular crime thriller. That same here, he got his first significant hit through Bejoy Nambiar’s 2011 ‘Shaitan’. He received nominations for best male debut and Best Actor in a supporting role.
The star had his first lead role in 2012 through ‘Hate Story’, also starring Nikhil Dwivedi and Paoli Dam. He played the antagonist Siddharth Dhanrajgir in the movie. The same year, he starred in ‘Peddlers’. His journey over the subsequent years have been quite eventful.
In 2013, Gulshan Devaiah appeared in prominent director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela’, also starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Supriya Pathak. The movie is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, with an Indian twist.
Gulshan’s next projects involved the 2015 adult comedy ‘Hunterrr’, ‘Junooniyat’ in 2016 and ‘A Death in the Gunj’ from the same year too. In 2018, he played a double role in the action comedy ‘Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota’, leading him to grab an award and a nomination.
Over the subsequent years, the actor has appeared in several other projects, including ‘Cabaret’ (2019), ‘Badhaai Do’ (2022) and ‘Shiksha Mandal’ (2022) and ‘Guns & Gulaabs’ (2023). He has also been a part of ‘Duranga’ (2022), a Hindi adaptation of a Korean drama.
His upcoming projects include ‘Ulajh‘ (2024). This thriller is in post production and stars Janhvi Kapoor and Adil Hussain too. It’s about the journey of a young IFS officer, who gets caught in a dangerous personal conspiracy while far from her home turf.
Gulshan Devaiah steals hearts in ‘8 AM Metro’
Gulshan Devaiah and Saiyami Kher’s ‘8 AM Metro’ dropped on OTT earlier this month. Directed by Raj Rachakonda, the film pairs the stars in a touching story of two strangers developing a bond amidst the hustle of Hyderabad’s metro.
The movie initially hit theatres on May 19, 2023. In the film, Saiyami plays a housewife whose mundane life is turned upside down when she has to rush to Hyderabad to tend to her pregnant sister who is confined to the bed.
The female character Iravati turns to Gulshan’s Preetam, a banker with more of him than meets the eye. The duo subsequently go on several journeys, finding solace in each other’s company. ‘8 AM Metro’ is streaming free on the ZEE5 platform.
