John Legend's DNC Prince Tribute Falls Flat, Guitarist Ari O'Neal Shines

John Legend’s performance of ‘Purple Rain’ in honor of Prince at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on August 21, 2024, has elicited negative criticism from Prince fans. The Grammy-winning singer’s version of ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ was not well-received at all as many fans deemed it as weak and unsuitable for Prince. However, it was not a complete washout night for the show as Ms Fender, the guitarist, was the star of the night and overshadowed Legend with her performance.

Legend’s Performance Has Not Given The Expected Results

John Legend was joined by Sheila E, a musician who had worked closely with Prince, at the United Center in Chicago to perform Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy”. The show was intended to pay tribute to Prince and to pump up the audience before Minnesota Governor Tim Walz spoke to the voters. However, Legend’s take on the classic ‘80s hit did not go down well with the audience and critics.

Some fans opined that Legend was more suited for the songs he delivered in his first album and one of them said, “First album John Legend could do this better, he’s too much of a crooner now. “ Others said that Prince would not have approved the performance and one of them said, “He would’ve hated it.”

Sheila E and Ari O’Neal Receive Praise

Nevertheless, the viewers’ reactions to the other aspects of the tribute were rather positive. Sheila E, a talented musician who had her own career and a friend of Prince was also applauded for her part in the show. A social media user said, “Sheila E is always [fire emojis],” proving that Sheila E is still relevant, and she has a relationship with Prince’s music.

However, the most spectacular was the guitarist Ari O’Neal, also called ‘Ms Fender. ‘ Although she was not a main performer, her incredible guitar playing attracted the audience’s attention and made her a new fan. Social media users praised her performance, with one stating, “Guitarist Ari O’Neal has gained a fan. Sheeeeeeessh. ” Another admirer gave her a perfect score, writing, “The guitar player: It is, therefore, deserving of ⭐ ️ ⭐ ️ ⭐ ️ ⭐ ️ ⭐ ️ out of five.

The Effect Of The Allegations On Legend’s Political Support

John Legend is one of the biggest supporters of Kamala Harris’ candidacy, and his performance at the DNC was most likely aimed at strengthening the support for the Democratic Party. However, the Prince tribute could have side effects on his political power, which the public did not expect. Of course, Legend’s musical skills and prior achievements cannot be questioned, however, this show has left doubts about his ability to engage other crowds and give other music legends their due credit.

The conflict over Legend’s performance shows that tribute acts are not easy to do, especially when the artist one is trying to pay homage to is as special as Prince. It also raises the question of choosing the right performer for such performances, as followers of great artists are very picky and have deep feelings connected with the songs.
