Made on a budget of Rs 550 crore, RRR made global headlines just recently as ‘Naatu Naatu’ – a song from the film – earned an Oscar for Best Original Song, creating history by becoming the first Indian song to claim the prestigious honour in this category.
The SS Rajamouli directorial has added many feathers to its cap, including the Oscar. It has gained a lot of attention both in India and abroad. In 2022, RRR had concluded its global run garnering Rs 1,039 crore gross.
RRR ruling highest grossing Indian films in Japan list
The appetite for Indian films is huge in the international market and RRR made the most of this. During its original run in October 2022 in Japan, this historical drama action film ruled theatres across the country for 561 days, raking in more than Rs 130 crore.
Starring Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr in lead roles, RRR re-released in Japan on May 10, 2024. It has been reported that the film directed by SS Rajamouli is the highest grossing Indian film in the country, featuring a lifetime box office collection of Rs 136.20 crore.
Set in pre-Independent India, RRR is a stunning film about a fearless fighter on a perilous mission and an officer in the British force. Once sharing a deep bond, these characters decide to chart out an inspirational path of freedom against the rulers.

Interestingly, KGF: Chapter 2 – starring Yash – needs just Rs 6 crores to enter the list of the top 10 highest grossing Indian films in Japan. The 10th position on the list is currently occupied by Dhoom 3. KGF 2 is re-releasing in Japan in June 2025.
