Singer and actor Selena Gomez, recently seen in ‘Emilia Perez’, posted an emotional message on Monday of herself reacting to the mass deportations launched by the Donald Trump administration that resulted in hundreds of arrests across the country.
In it, Selena highlighted that “all my people are getting attacked.” “The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry.” She promised to do things she could to help out those affected by the intensifying arrests and deportations.
Border Czar Tom Homan reacts to Selena Gomez’s clip
In another post shared to her Instagram story after the first clip, Selena Gomez stressed that “apparently it is not ok to show empathy for people.” But that post has also been deleted. She has yet to address her statements on her social media pages.
But her statements are luring a lot of attention. Netizens are expressing mixed reactions. Later on Monday, US Border Czar Tom Homan responded to Selena’s clip, questioning her response for those dying from fentanyl brought into the US across the southern border.
Homan also questioned the singer and actor’s reaction to the concerning case of children being illegally smuggled into the US only to be killed or sex trafficked – appearing to reference a claim that has been challenged.
Selena Gomez expressing notable support for immigrant rights
On Sunday, the Trump administration launched an immigration enforcement blitz across the country. More than 950 people faced arrests, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Multiple agencies are part of the efforts.
Selena Gomez is famous for her support for immigrant rights. In 2019, she hosted a series ‘Living Undocumented’, highlighting the struggles of different immigrant families facing ICE deportations. This series is streaming on Netflix.
The same year, Selena – a Mexican-American – penned an op-ed for TIME, discussing her aunt’s journey crossing the US-Mexico border “hidden in the back of the truck” in the 1990s. “Fear did not stop my aunt from getting into the back of that truck,” she noted at the time.
