Legendary actor Kamal Hassan known for his iconic movies like ‘Nayakan’, ‘Kuruthipunal’, ‘Anbe Sivam’ and many more, further reaching a global audience has come out and requested the fans and media to drop his famous moniker ‘Ulaganayagan’. The actor took it to his ‘X’ profile, releasing statements on Monday, 11 November, 2024.

“I have always felt a deep sense of gratitude over being bestowed with endearing titles such as ‘Ulaganayagan’ among others” read the statement where the actor added that he feels humble and grateful for the love from fans and colleagues over the years. Kamal Hassan has also revealed his love towards cinema and he will always be a student of cinema and that he humbly believes that “artists should not be elevated above the art”.
The ‘Viswaroopam’ actor put forth a humble request saying, “I humbly request that all my fans, the media, members of film fraternity, party cadre and fellow Indians, to here on after, refer to me simply as Kamal Haasan or Kamal or KH.” This statement from the actor came as a surprise as fans quickly drew comparison to actor Ajith Kumar, who in 2021 asked his fans and media to drop the famous prefix ‘Thala’ and just address him as Ajith Kumar, Ajith or AK.
The act of ‘hero worship’ and proclaiming an attractive title or prefix is a huge tradition followed by ardent cinema fans, who are earnest and devoted to maintain the star status of many actors, even to the neglect of the said actors. This sudden statement from Kamal Hassan is not received easily by the fans, as many resort to the idea of humour, opting for other names such as ‘Aandavar’ while others convey their disappointment and reluctance.
