The film industry of India has always been very colorful and energetic and has given many magnificent movies which have made people go crazy. But not all the films that are produced and released from the shiny studios of Mumbai turn into a hit. There are films that are produced with great casts, huge budgets and people’s high expectations, but these films turn out to be complete flops. In the next section, we look at some of the worst financial losses Bollywood has had to face.
1. Kites (2010)
Nett Collection: ₹47. 84 crore
Gross Collection: ₹65. 37 crore
Budget: ₹82 crore
Kites was a magnum opus which starred Hrithik Roshan and Mexican actress Bárbara Mori. The film which was directed by Anurag Basu tried to combine the Bollywood style with Hollywood ingredients. Unfortunately, it did not leave a good impression and could not cover the cost of the making which made it a huge box office disaster.
2. Guzaarish (2010)

Gross Collection: ₹40. 38 crore
Budget: ₹74 crore
Another movie that touches a sensitive subject was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish which had Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead. Although the movie was appreciated widely for its performances and direction, it was a bitter pill for the producers to swallow, as it did not find a wide audience appeal.
3. Players (2012)
Nett Collection: ₹29. 90 crore
Gross Collection: ₹40. 58 crore
Budget: ₹55 crore
Players, a multi-starrer which starred Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu and Bobby Deol was an action filled heist movie based on a Hollywood movie known as The Italian Job. But the film failed to impress the audience and even critics, and it failed due to the poor direction of the movie.
4. Tezz (2012)
Nett Collection: ₹15. 91 crore
Gross Collection: ₹21. 64 crore
Budget: ₹52 crore
Priyadarshan’s action thriller Tezz was a big disappointment at the box office although the film starred Ajay Devgn and Anil Kapoor. This is primarily because the plot of the film was quite unoriginal and therefore its plot was predictable.
5. Joker (2012)
Nett Collection: ₹20. 23 crore
Gross Collection: ₹27. 53 crore
Budget: ₹47 crore
Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha’s Joker did not get its science fiction comedy right for the audience to enjoy. Shirish Kunder directed this movie which was badly received by the audience due to the poor and incoherent plot and inadequate graphical representation.
6. Bombay Velvet (2015)
Nett Collection: ₹22. 80 crore
Gross Collection: ₹30. 36 crore
Budget: ₹118 crore
The movie Bombay Velvet directed by Anurag Kashyap featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma was one of the most anticipated movies of 2015. However, its plot was intricate and not many people were able to relate to it which resulted in the film’s failure.
7. Mohenjo Daro (2016)
Nett Collection: ₹53. 66 crore
Gross Collection: ₹74. 93 crore
Budget: ₹138 crore
Ashutosh Gowariker, who had earlier directed films like Swades and Jodha Akbar was in the process of making a movie on the Mohenjo Daro civilization, which is still in the dark age with the hero of Hindi cinema Hrithik Roshan. However, due to poor script and ineffective visuals the grandeur of this film could not enjoy a successful run at the Box Office.
8. Jagga Jasoos (2017)
Nett Collection: ₹52. 61 crore
Gross Collection: ₹69. 31 crore
Budget: ₹131 crore
Jagga Jasoos was another film with Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif which was a musical adventure movie and was in pre-production for many years. Although it was acclaimed by critics for its originality and the storyline the movie could not make its producers and directors get their money back.
9. Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017)
Nett Collection: ₹62 crore
Gross Collection: ₹80. 11 crore
Budget: ₹119 crore
Though having Superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles, Imtiaz Ali’s romantic drama Jab Harry Met Sejal failed to impress the audience. These are some of the reasons why the film failed to impress viewers; its plot was very much predictable and it lacked depth.
10. Raabta (2017)
Nett Collection: ₹21. 68 crore
Gross Collection: ₹29. 94 crore
Budget: ₹47 crore
The film Raabta with Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon was a movie which was based on reincarnation but it could not set the hearts of the people on fire. Because of a weak plot and bad direction, the film did not find its audience.
