Kareena Kapoor's "The Buckingham Murders" Faces Slow Start at Box Office

“The Buckingham Murders” fails to mint a glowing response at the box office on the opening day. The investigative thriller, Kapoor’s debut as a producer, earn only ₹1.15 crore on Friday. While the reviews about Kapoor’s work as a police officer in particular were great, the film based on this idea couldn’t attract the audience in the UK. This is a very low start as compared to Kapoor’s last movie ‘The Crew’ which had earned more than ₹ 10 crore on its opening day in the earlier part of this year.

Opening Day Performance and Comparisons

“The Buckingham Murders” saw a very tough opening at the box office, garnering only ₹1.15 crore on its opening day. The Buckingham Murders was released in both its original version Hinglish (80% dialogues in English, 20% in Hindi), and a dubbed Hindi version. This dismal performance is all the more disappointing when put against Kareena’s earlier women-centric film “The Crew,” wherein she collected nearly ten times this amount on the opening day.

The low count may be attributed to poor promotional activities as well as the kind of movie that may not attract every viewer. The movie is facing stiff competition from holdovers like blockbuster “Stree 2” besides re-release classics “Tumbbad” and “Veer-Zaara.”

Film Synopsis and Critical Reception

“The Buckingham Murders” is a film based on the story of Sergeant Jasmeet ‘Jass’ Bhamra, played by Kareena Kapoor. She is seen to be grieving over the death of her young son Ekam. She then goes ahead and gets exposed to a case of a missing boy, Ishpreet, about the age of her deceased son. Chef Ranveer Brar also makes an appearance in the film.

Despite weak box office, the movie received rave reviews. Also, Kareena’s acting performance has got a lot of praise. Especially in the portrayal of a mother whose son has been kidnapped along with her teenage sister, and a single-minded police officer, contrary to what she had started her career off with in Jab We Met and The Crew-her romantic lead performances.

Future Prospects and Upcoming Projects

The Buckingham Murders would seem to have been a slower development, but favorable reviews can still propel the film toward success. The coming days, therefore, will be crucial in determining if the film will save itself once it hits theatres or crumbles beyond redemption.

Fans of Kareena Kapoor will get to see her onscreen in Rohit Shetty’s “Singham Again,” which is presently in production. How her career shapes up over the next few years will depend a lot on her continued experimentation with diverse roles and forays into production, but for now, she remains a leading lady.
