The 69th Filmfare Awards that took place in the year 2024 marked the biggest night of glitz and glamor for the Indian film industry. The glamorous affair celebrated excellence in the fields of acting and directing, music and technology among others. ”12th Fail” was awarded the Best Film and Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were awarded the Best Actor and Actress awards for their roles in “Animal” and “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani” respectively. The awards ceremony was a celebration of the Bollywood industry’s versatility and talent, presenting the hits and the gems of the year. This year’s event underlined the dynamics of the Indian cinema and its unyielding focus on the quality of the narratives.
Major Award Winners and Their Surprises
There were classic victories and more than a few upsets at the 2024 Filmfare Awards. The Vidhu Vinod Chopra directed “12th Fail” was the big winner of the night bagging the Best Film trophy away from more glamorous films like “Animal,” “Jawan,” and “Pathaan.” Chopra also received the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards for the same film.
In the acting categories, the most sensational movie of the year ‘Animal’ got the best actor award for Ranbir Kapoor and the charming Alia Bhatt was awarded the best actress for her performance in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani’. Other awards for the supporting actor went to Vicky Kaushal for “Dunki” and Shabana Azmi for “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani.”
The music categories were won by Album of the Year ‘Animal’, lyrics for ‘Tere Vaaste’ from ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’ by Amitabh Bhattacharya, male playback singer ‘Arjan Vailly’ from ‘Animal’ by Bhupinder Babbal and female playback singer ‘Besharam Rang’ from ‘Pathaan’ by Shilpa Rao.
Technical Merit and Artistic Genius
The Filmfare Awards also focused on the behind the scene personnel in the making of the movies – the technical and creative crews. The movie ‘Jawan’ was appreciated for its visual effects and thus Red Chillies VFX bagged the Best VFX award. The award for sound designing went to Kunal Sharma for ‘Sam Bahadur’ and Sync Cinema for ‘Animal’ which shows how the aspect of audio in motion pictures is gradually becoming a significant aspect in filmmaking.
The movie “Sam Bahadur” continued to reign in the technical columns, clinching the Best Production Design for Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray and the Best Costume for Sachin Lovelekar, Divvya Gambhir, and Nidhhi Gambhir. It is also evident that the elements of period drama and historical authenticity were appreciated by the jury of the award.
Some of the other technical awards were the award for best editing for ‘12th Fail’ (Jaskunwar Singh Kohli and Vidhu Vinod Chopra), Best Cinematography for ‘Three of Us’ (Avinash Arun Dhaware), and the award for the best Action for ‘Jawan’ (Spiro Razatos and team). These awards also highlighted that filmmaking is a team effort and each department is very essential in the process of making a film.
Diversity and New Talent
The Filmfare Awards held in 2024 proved that the industry is ready to embrace new narratives and talents. The Best Story category showed the variety of stories that can engage the viewers with Amit Rai’s ‘OMG 2’ and Devashish Makhija’s ‘Joram’ presenting the viewers with deep thoughts and powerful drama respectively.
Fresh talent was also rewarded, Shreyas Puranik receiving the R D Burman Award for Upcoming Music Talent for the song “Satranga” from “Animal. “ The awarding of new talents along with the stars guarantees that Bollywood will remain fresh and growing.

The awards also honored the stalwarts of the industry, the veteran director David Dhawan was honored with Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the Indian film industry especially for the comedy films.
The winners’ list showcased the versatility in terms of film and genre, which was indicative of the growing horizon of Bollywood. Ranging from large scale commercial movies to content based relatively smaller movies, the awards honored all forms of Indian cinema.
