Highlights
To be premiered on the streaming site Prime Video on September 6, 2024, Call Me Bae will be an OTT debut for Ananya Panday. Produced by Karan Johar, the comic drama series is based on the life of a South Delhi heiress who is abruptly pulled out from her world of comfort and placed in middle class life. It slowly transitions to privileging, struggling, and making a growthful career all through laughter. Led by a star cast and crew, Call Me Bae attempts to do something new with the age-old ‘rags to riches’ story for India.
From Privilege to Perseverance: Call Me Bae’s Premise
Call Me Bae is based on the story of a young girl, Ananya Pandey, who was born with a silver spoon in her mouth in South Delhi. The teaser gives a sneak-peek into this glamorous life and makes way for designer ensembles, posh parties, and a complete disconnect from common people’s problems. Though one fine day, she realizes that all her bank cards are declined, rendering her middle-class.
It takes the audience through her struggles to shift to Mumbai, problems of job and apartment hunting, and even how to clean one’s own living space—things all foreign to her. The everyday struggles she had previously known only by reading become her new way of life. While developing its characters authentically, the show tries to seek out humor as the heroine gets used to fending for herself in a world from which she has observed so much and remained aloof.
Probably the most touching moment in the teaser is when Ananya’s character shares her struggle with a security guard, who simply replies, “Your struggle is what our dreams are made of.” That somewhat epitomizes how the show intends to take audiences across the relative boundaries of hardships and often-disconnected perceptions between different social classes.

Anticipation and Expectations
The announcement of Call Me Bae opened up a lot of discussions within the entertainment circles and the fans. Several reasons instill high expectations from this show:
OTT Debut of Ananya Panday: The appearance of the young and quite successful actress Ananya in Bollywood, as well as her transition to the digital platform, is viewed with interest. This role gives her a chance to act and show that she can do it in a format that provides more room to create a character than films do.
Relevant Themes: This premise brings up issues with the audience—class divide, privilege, and the struggle of being independent. It is sure to elicit a positive response from its audience and therefore is a good chance to get a good discussion going.
Production Value: Dharma Entertainment now being headed by Karan Johar, the viewers do get to witness a neatly packaged and well-produced show.
Genre Blend: The series will contain both comedy and drama features in it. This is a formula that has proven to be effective in capturing the attention of the audience at both extremes of the spectrum on streaming services.
Maine Pyar Kiya Set for Nostalgic Theatrical Re-release on 35th Anniversary
Fan reactions to the teaser seem largely positive, with several people in praise of the concept and Ananya seeming tailor-made for the part. Some viewers have drawn comparisons with any other “fish out of water” stories or noted similarities to Blair from Gossip Girl. Still, the Indian context and particular focus on the South Delhi-Mumbai cultural divide set Call Me Bae apart as a different sort of entry for the genre.
