Bharti Singh’s Struggles
Born into extreme poverty, Bharti lost her father at a young age. After that her siblings had to support the family by working in factories stitching heavy blankets and dupattas. She said, “I have seen enough poverty with my family and I don’t want to face that again. If you do a background check you will find most comedians are from poor backgrounds. No one does comedy if they are rich.”
Living hand to mouth isn’t a pretty sight and Bharti’s memory of those days are pretty hard to hear for anyone. She went on to say, “My mom used to work in people’s homes while I used to sit near the door. She would even clean toilets and get the leftover food from the house owners. The stale food would become our fresh food and that would make our day.”
Career as a Comedian and Rise to Fame
Despite these harsh conditions, she never lost her sense of humour. Bharti used to make her school friends and during a school fest, she caught the attention of comedian Sudesh Lehri. When asked about the incident, Bharti said, “Sudesh Lehri spotted me and left. He asked the teacher to call me. That was my first national youth festival, for which we went to Andhra Pradesh. Our group of five girls won the gold medals.”
Sudesh Lehri encouraged Bharti to participate in comedy shows and she got selected. After that she got calls from Mumbai and took her mother with her to the city of dreams and never looked back.
Over the years, she got roles in The Kapil Sharma Show and Comedy Circus and proved herself. In a way, she paved the path for female comedians to enter the industry and establish themselves.
Till date, she faces criticism for being fat. She said that people used to call her Moti, but that didn’t affect her in any way. She proudly flaunts the fact that she is fat and says she is a Punjabi and eats Parathas everyday.
In a way, she is the epitome of success and inspiration for many common young
girls and boys out there.
Bharti’s Award and Achievements
The young girl from Punjab, currently aged around 40 has achieved many awards over the years. She has to her name the Indian Telly Award for Best actor in a Comic Role in 2014, in 2015 she received Big Star Most Entertaining Jury / Host (TV), She received ITA Award for Best Actress Comedy in 2012 and 2019, ITA Award for Best Actress Comedy (Popular) in 2022, Golden Petal Awards for Best Comedian in 2017, and Punjabi Music Best Comedy Album Award in 2015.
She also received nominations for various awards including Bollywood Life Awards in 2024 and 2021 for the Most Real Life Loved Couple and Best Social Media TV Couple respectively shared with her husband Harsh Limbachiyaa on both occasions.
She was also the Winner of Talent Track Awards where she won the Viral Sensation of the Year Award in the Digital Movies and TV Series category.
She has been nominated 2 times and won 2 times the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award, India in 2022, 2019 and 2016 respectively. She was nominated Favourite Comedian and won Favourite TV actress in 2022 and was the winner of Favourite Actress TV for her role in The Khatra Show in 2019. Along with that, she was nominated for favourite Actress for the Kapil Sharma Show in 2016.
