Highlights
In 2000, legendary director J.P. Dutta launched the careers of Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan in “Refugee”. But according to a story both actors were initially set to debut in different films- Kareena was supposed to debut with Rakesh Roshan’s “Kaho na Pyaar Hai” and Abhishek in J.P. Dutta’s historical project “Aakhiri Mughal.” However fate had some other plans, where Kareena rejected Kaho na Pyaar Hai and Aakhiri Mughal was never shot and this led them to “Refugee”, a cross-border love story set against the backdrop of India-Pakistan conflict.
Kareena Kapoor: The Undisputed Queen
Kareena captivated audiences from her first appearance in “Refugee”, with her talent and radiant beauty. Coming from The Kapoor family and Karisma Kapoor’s status as the leading diva of Bollywood at that time was cherry on the cake for Kareena. Although “Refugee” failed to impress the audience on Big Screens, Kareena’s performance earned her the Best Debut Award, setting the stage for a successful career. Over the years, she delivered memorable performances in films like “ Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham,” “Jab We Met,” “Chameli,” “Talaash,” “Laal Singh Chaddha” and “Jaane Jaan.”
Kareena’s journey in Bollywood has been marked by versatility, balancing commercial hits with critically acclaimed roles. She continues to be one of the industry’s top actresses, recently starring in the Superhit film “Jaane Jaan” alongside Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Verma and “Crew ” also starring Tabu, Kriti Sanon, Diljit Dosanjh and Kapil Sharma. Her aura and influence extends beyond acting, with successful ventures in fashion and endorsements.
Kareena shared a heartfelt post on Instagram to celebrate her debut film’s 24th anniversary, featuring a compilation video of her scenes from “Refugee”.
Abhishek Bachchan: The Underdog’s Journey
Abhishek Bachchan’s debut in “Refugee” was overshadowed by Hritik Roshan’s blockbuster “Kaho Na Pyaar Hai.” Despite this slow start Abhishek pristined, showcasing his talent in films like “Yuva ,” “ Guru,” “Bunty aur Babli,” “Sarkar,” “Paa ,” “Dhoom,” “Raavan,” “Dasvi” and “Big Bull.” His performance in “Guru” was particularly praised, earning him critical acclaim and commercial success.
However, Abhishek’s career has seen its share of ups and downs. The title of Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan’s son overshadowed his image as an artist. While some of his films failed to perform at the box office, his dedication and hardwork to diverse roles remain unwavering. Recently Abhishek has found a new rhythm with marvelous performances in “Breathe: Into the Shadow” and the sports drama “Ghoomer.” His versatility and commitment to his craft have earned him a respected place in Bollywood.
To mark this milestone, a fan on social media shared a video showcasing Abhishek’s diverse filmography from “Refugee” to “Ghoomer,” praising his versatility. Responding to that tweet, proud father Amitabh Bachchan expressed his admiration for son through a post on X.
