Vampire Comedy "Thamba" Joins Maddock Supernatural Universe: Director Amar Kaushik Confirms

With the success of “Stree 2”, the director Amar Kaushik is all set to come up with his next film in the supernatural comedy genre. During an interview, Kaushik said that he will be the producer for “Thamba” which is a vampire comedy featuring Ayushmann Khurrana. This announcement is the second addition to the Maddock Supernatural Universe after the movie ‘Stree’ which was released in 2018. The new project will try to introduce a new twist to the already popular Bollywood horror-comedy subgenre. The following article gives information about the new film and its position in the new supernatural series.

Adding Onto The Maddock Supernatural Universe

Amar Kaushik who has delivered many successful films in the horror-comedy genre will be the producer of “Thamba”. To be part of the Maddock Supernatural Universe, “Thamba” is next in line after the super success of “Stree “Bhediya” and “Munjya” This announcement came in after the successful sequel of “‘Stree” which has grossed ₹500 crore in India. The director informed us that “Thamba” will go on the floor in the next two months, which means that the pre-production process has already started. This short time indicates that Maddock Films is keen on growing their supernatural comedy series as fast as possible.

Decision to focus on vampires for the next instalment shows that the studio aims to adapt other mythical creatures and legends in the world of film. It not only refreshes the franchise but also provides the variety of the narrative in the context of the horror-comedy subgenre.

Star Power and Creative Collaborations

Though, Amar Kaushik has only confirmed Ayushmann Khurrana for “Thamba,” the earlier buzz was that Rashmika Mandanna might also be a part of this project. If true, this would be the first time Khurrana and Mandanna will be sharing screen space as two of Bollywood’s most promising young talents.

The project’s cast is also very interesting, especially Ayushmann Khurrana. As an actor who has been part of many films with social messages and who has the ability of mixing comedy with horror, Khurrana’s participation might just be an indication that “Thamba” is not just a funny movie with some horror scenes but has something more to offer. He had worked with producer Dinesh Vijan in the previous film ‘Bala’ which was also appreciated and therefore the audience was eagerly waiting to see them together again in this vampire comedy. It is still unclear who will be the creative team behind “Thamba”, however, the script is still in the writing phase. Kaushik revealed that the film will go into pre-production soon which gives a clear signal that the project is on the fast lane to production.

The Future Of Supernatural Comedies In Bollywood

The news of ‘Thamba’ is at a time when supernatural comedies are trending among the Indian audiences. The success of ‘Stree’ franchise and other films in the Maddock Supernatural Universe have established that there is a large audience interested in horror-comedy movies based on Indian folklore. Amar Kaushik also revealed that the second part of ‘Bhediya’ with Varun Dhawan is in the pipeline. He said that the story has been completed but the screenplay is still in the process of being developed to his expectations. This dedication towards quality also indicates that Maddock Films is more interested in developing a long term, well received franchise rather than churning out sequels.

The fact that Maddock Films has been developing the Supernatural Universe with ‘Thamba’ and ‘Bhediya 2’ seems to show the long-term planning of the production house to weave a web of films. This way, similar to the successful Hollywood franchises, could potentially transform Bollywood’s approach to genre filmmaking.
