When it comes to the overall heat of summer and the blockbuster movies, August 2024 will certainly deliver a lot of expected American movies of various categories. The most popular movies in this month are diverse – superhero blockbusters and cartoons for children, intensive dramas and horror films – all of them will be interesting for movie viewers. The major studios are bringing out their heavy hitting, star studded and backed by big name directors.

Several series are receiving sequels, and while this is the case, there are also new concepts as well. Given that August’s programming includes a combination of theatrical exclusives and streaming premieres, the range showcases one more step in the development of distribution models. This piece gives a sneak peek into the top Hollywood movies that are expected to grace theaters across the globe in August 2024.

Kraven the Hunter (August 30)

A new film with Spider-Man characters pertains to the Sony Spider-Man Universe through this movie featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the big game hunter turned antagonist. Another movie is ‘Bold’ which has been directed by J. C. Chandor and stars Ariana DeBose and Russell Crowe, among others, also Alessandro Nivola have been included.

Harold and the Purple Crayon (August 2)

This film is a live-action/animation feature extracted from the children’s book detailing adventures of Harold with a magical purple crayon. Zachary Levi is accompanied by Zooey Deschanel, and Alfred Molina in other roles in the movie. 

Saving Bikini Bottom: Sandy Cheeks the Movie (August 2)

Patrick star renders a spin-off to the original series in which sponge Bob Square pants friend Sandy Cheeks dominates the show. Starring Carolyn Lawrence, Tom Kenny, and with Johnny Knoxville and Craig Robinson, guests, the Netflix original film will have Sandy on her journey to save her world that is under threat.

Yo Gabba Gabbaland (August 9)

This family friendly musical is the movie adaptation of the popular children’s TV series featuring the rainbow rollercoaster gang. Applicants have an opportunity to watch the film, created by using elements of live-action and animation and available on Apple TV+ The show is based on the DJ Lance Rock and his puppets for the new generation.

The Instigators (August 9)

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck teamed up again for this Apple TV+ heist comedy shot and directed by Doug Liman. Also, the cast includes Harrelson, Chau, Hauser, and Rhames. Unable to finish a robbery, two robbers have to flee and, as luck would have it, involve a therapist in the process.

The Union (August 16)

Netflix action thriller with Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry being about an ex-CIA agent who is pulled back into her world of spies. The Union has the feel of an international action series with intrigue and conspiracy, and it is to be directed by Julian Farino.

Mothers’ Instinct (August 2)

This is a psychological thriller that features two Hollywood talented actresses Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain and it is set in America of the 1960s. The two are neighbors and childhood friends until a car accident derails their happy existence and turns them into paranoid enemies fueled by self-assertion. This emotionally charged film about motherhood and guilt is the debut feature of director Benoît Delhomme.

It Ends with Us (August 9)

This film is a romantic drama that is based on Colleen Hoover’s popular novel; however, the key theme of the movie is domestic abuse. Blake Lively as the protagonist Lily is a woman who gets entangled in the world of crime and has to face her past as she is attracted to a charming neurosurgeon played by Justin Baldoni who also directed the film. 

Comedic Delights

Jackpot (August 15)

Action-comedy where Awkwafina plays a sad woman, who involves former convict John Cena, in the search for a winning lottery ticket. This movie was directed by Paul Feig who has equally directed movies like Bridesmaids and Spy Jackpot assures a lot of fun and hilarious mishaps.

Blink Twice (August 23)

This black comedy thriller is the first directorial work of Zoë Kravitz featuring Channing Tatum, Naomi Ackie, and Christian Slater. A budding movie is about what happens to a cocktail waitress who is invited to a strange gathering on a tech billionaires’ island.

Horror and Suspense

Trap (August 9)

The Master of stupefying thrillers M. Night Shyamalan rises again with the new thriller starring the Shinigami from Hollywood Josh Hartnett. The specific plot points have yet to be disclosed, but the film is expected to deliver standard Shyamalan’s shocking moments along with the incorporation of the horror/mystery genres.

Alien: Romulus (August 23)

The creator of a series of films in the genre of science fiction and horror receives a continuation from the hands of Fede Álvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead). This is one of the standalone novels that was written by the author and is set in between the Alien movie and revolves around a set of young space colonists that meet the Xenomorphs.

Afraid (August 30)

Chris Weitz directs this supernatural horror movie with David Dastmalchian, Katherine Waterstom, and John Cho in the lead roles. A family that has relocated to a quiet, unnamed town to try to escape from the historical horror that began in Washington starts receiving strange phone calls from a hospital and is attacked by an old boogieman.

Streaming Exclusives

Daughters’ (August 14)

This documentary is directed by Angela Patton and Natalie Rae based on fathers that are imprisoned and their daughters performing in an annual dance. Searingly honest and deeply moving, Daughters forces the audience to understand the role of female offenders and the effect of mass incarceration.

His Three Daughters (August 20)

Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne are all sisters who come back home to take care of their ill father in this moving drama. Packed with autobiographical elements and filled with the energy of Jacobs’ youth, the film offers a sensitive look at grief, sisterhood, and the intricacies of the parent-child bond as established by the director Azazel Jacobs.

Since there are quite many films included in the list it doesn’t give the August 2024 viewers so many cinematic experiences to choose from when it comes to theatrical release but from the home-viewing side there is definitely a lot of choice. June has it all, from grand filmic entertainments to serious dramas, and tones of sprawling narratives that define modern Hollywood.
