Simon Fisher-Becker, a British character actor prominent for his character in ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ and other small but impactful roles, died on Sunday at the age of 63. His husband Tony Dugdale took to social media to announce his death.
Tony did not disclose any additional details about Fisher-Becker’s cause of death. Kim Barry, the actor’s agent at Jaffrey Management, has also confirmed the incident to the media, stressing: “I lost not only a client … but a close personal friend of 15 years standing.”
The role that transformed Simon Fisher-Becker’s career
Simon Fisher-Becker’s career spanned film, theatre and TV. He had a particular focus on comedy and drama. He is famous in different countries for playing the Fat Friar, the cheerful, resident ghost of the Hufflepuff House in ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’.
Fisher-Becker has also appeared in multiple episodes of the BBC’s science-fiction series ‘Doctor Who’ as a recurring character named Dorium Maldovar, a large blue-skinned alien. It is probably this role that truly transformed his career.
Born in 1961 in London, Fisher-Becker expressed interest in music as a child but found acting after being cast as Mr Bumble in one of his school’s plays. But he did not seriously consider acting professionally until years later, after being laid off from a job.

Initially, Simon Fisher-Becker had to appear only in one scene in an episode of the BBC sci-fi. But Dorium became such an immediate sensation among fans that he had to appear in a couple more episodes of the series.
Fisher-Becker has appeared in a of series and films, mostly in small but memorable roles. His credits also include ‘Puppy Love’, a comedy about dog training, and in the ensemble of the 2012 ‘Les Misérables’ film for the number ‘Master of the House’.
