Hip-hop has lost one of its most influential and legendary artists Clark Kent, along with his production skills, he brought many innovations to hip-hop. Kent, whose real name was Rodolfo A. Franklin was 58 years and died on Thursday evening after battling colon cancer for three years. His family has shared this news on social media, stating that he passed away gently surrounded by his wife, Kesha, daughter Kabriah, and son Antonio.
In their heartfelt message, his family wrote, “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of the beloved Rodolfo A. Franklin, known to the world as DJ Clark Kent. Clark passed away Thursday evening surrounded by his devoted wife Kesha, daughter Kabriah, and son Antonio. Clark quietly and valiantly fought a three-year battle with colon cancer while continuing to share his gifts with the world. The family is grateful for everyone’s love, support, and prayers during this time and asks for privacy as they process this immense loss.”
A Legacy in Hip-Hop
DJ Clark Kent was born and raised in Brooklyn starting his DJ for rapper Dana Dane in the late 1980’s. His talents garnered attention leading him to work on iconic projects throughout his career. Kent gained fame in 1995 with Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s debut single, “Player’s Anthem” which featured Biggie Smalls and included new rap talent Lil’ Kim. His beats gave direction and rhythm to Jay-Z’s first album “Reasonable Doubt” most lyrically portraying ‘Brooklyn’s Finest’ and ‘Coming of Age,’ later responsible for Jay-Z’s success.

With such a staggering personality, Kent’s impression went on to different genres and significant personalities. He worked with Mariah Carey in “Loverboy” in the “Glitter” soundtrack in 2001 which put him among the most sought-after producers. His exemplary list of associates includes Queen Latifah, Ye, Redman, 50 Cent, and Estelle, making his influence in the music industry can’t be overemphasized.
Recognized by Friends and Family
The hip-hop community and everyone else mourned, respecting and admiring Kent’s accomplishments and contributions. Questlove drummer for The Roots stated, “Clark will forever be the culture.” Kent’s cousin, rapper Foxy Brown, shared her tribute, writing, “LOVE YOU KESH! MY BIG COUSIN WHO STARTED ALL THIS SH– FOR US! WE LOVE YOU TONY!”

It is also known that Clark not only popularized music but also was an enthusiastic sneakerhead; he owned over 3500 pairs of sneakers in his entire life. Due to this love, he has worked with Nike, Adidas, and New Balance among others which helped him associate with a culture that shaped his work.
