Tillotama Shome On 'The Night Manager' Emmy Nomination: A Surreal Experience

Prominent Indian actor Tillotama Shome has noted with sheer delight and surprise her web series ‘The Night Manager’ has been nominated for the International Emmy in the Best Drama Series category. The nomination, which makes it the only Indian show among 14 categories at the 2024 International Emmy Awards, came as a pleasant shock to the cast and crew. Shome’s character is inspired by Olivia Coleman, a British actress who acted in the same role in the original web series. Shome’s reflection on this achievement is as much about her respect for Coleman as it is about the pride India has in having her represent it on the international stage. This nomination feels like a payoff for all the work that was done during the production of the movie, which was shot in Sri Lanka which was struggling through a recession at the time.

A Dream Come True for Tillotama Shome

Tillotama Shome says that the Emmy nomination for The Night Manager is something out of a dream. She and her team did not believe this when the news was first out. The show is an Indian version of the British series and also stars famous actors, including Anil Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapoor, and Sobhita Dhulipala. Shome got to perform the part that was played by Olivia Coleman, which she said she looks up to and is inspired by.

Shome shares the time she got to know about the nomination and said, “I thought it was a dream and I will wake up and it was not real.” It’s a dream come true. The feeling is special because now we are presenting India to the world, which we had not thought of when designing the show.” Such excitement to attend the International Emmys shows how important this achievement is in her career.

Challenges Behind the Success

Shooting The Night Manager was not a joke, considering the socio-economic situation in Sri Lanka when the shooting was taking place. According to Shome, the country was going through a very bad economic period when fuel and electricity were scarce, major challenges to the people and the shooting crew. Nevertheless, the cast and crew continue to work hard and strive to deliver all episodes of the series.

Shome has some pleasant memories of how everybody struggled and persevered through these problems. ‘People were facing one or another problem, but we went through one disaster after another to finish the show’. Getting nominated now makes all that effort worthwhile, she says. It is not only a victory for Shome and the team but also the result of their hard work under unfavorable conditions.
